Dunscore Church Eco-Congregation Group (DCECG)
This group is one of over 250 in Scotland. It’s aims are to link environmental issues to our Christian faith and to respond with action in our church and community.
Since 2003 we have worked with other groups in Dunscore, including the Community Council, the school and Pre-school Centre. We are also involved in global environmental issues, raising money for the Lubuto congregation in Zambia and World Vision. We were instrumental in the setting up of Dunscore Fairtrade Group.
As a church, we try to be environmentally aware by using recycled paper, safe cleaning products and Fairtrade food. Our electricity is supplied by Good Energy. We have a ‘Green Corner’ with a library, magazine exchange, noticeboard and an area for recycling printer cartridges, mobile phones, spectacles, milk bottle tops and stamps. We also run a Freecycle scheme which involves the local community. We actively encourage people to walk or cycle to church or to car share wherever possible.
We have been given two awards by Eco-Congregation Scotland. One in 2005 and another in 2008. You can see these on the wall outside the church.
In July 2010 we helped to build a greenhouse for Dunscore School. The frame was made from timber donated by the Carronbridge Sawmill and Stevenson McConnel. The 'glass' was made from 1500 2-litre plastic bottles collected by the people of Dunscore. The frame was put together by Andy Lee (photo) and the walls were assembled one summer evening by a group of adults and young people (photo). (Instructions can be seen at www.reapscotland.org.uk). The greenhouse featured on the school's Gala float and won 2nd prize. It will remain as a part of the school garden."
We are part of a network of Eco-Congregations in Dumfries and Galloway. Other registered churches include Annan St. Andrews, Dalbeattie Parish Church, St Andrews RC Church (Dumfries). The network meets 4 times a year.
